Walk beside them – so no one faces winter alone

For thousands across the UK, winter doesn’t just bring cold – it brings crisis. It is frightening, lonely, and unforgiving.

As you walk through history, families today are facing impossible choices – between heating and eating, warmth and survival.

  • 1 in 3 households will face fuel poverty this winter
  • Over 2 million children will sleep in cold bedrooms
  • Hundreds of single mothers and widows will go without heat to feed their children
  • Asylum seekers and refugees will endure the cold with almost nothing
  • Survivors of abuse will struggle to start anew in bare, freezing flats

This is happening here – in our communities, on our streets. They are not strangers – but our neighbours in need and brothers and sisters in faith.

Your footsteps will help raise £150k to help 482 vulnerable families facing poverty, isolation and trauma across the UK survive the coldest, harshest season of the year.

Together, we will walk in solidarity with:

  • Asylum seekers living on just £9 a week after fleeing from Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Sudan and other war-torn countries
  • Refugee families facing their first winter in the UK on the edge of homelessness
  • Families torn apart by detention and national security measures
  • Single mothers and widows struggling to keep their children warm
  • Survivors of abuse trying to rebuild their lives in safety
  • Reverts facing isolation and financial hardship

Together, we can bring them warmth, dignity, and relief this winter.

Walk beside them this winter. So no one faces the cold alone.

Step back in time so they can step forward

This walk is part of Embrace’s wider Winter Campaign, Snowflakes of Mercy.

  • £113,444 still urgently needed to support 358 families.
  • £150,645 total goal to provide winter aid to 482 families.

When you walk beside them and fundraise, you create a blanket of relief for families in crisis. Your steps in their struggle provide:

  • £100 for Essential Winter Clothing for every vulnerable individual
  • £25 for Blankets of Relief – warm bedding and duvets for cold nights
  • £400 for Warm Homes – with the cost of their energy bills this winter.

By raising our minimum sponsorship target of £150, you can provide £100 to clothe someone in need, and 2 winter duvets.

Every step you take, every pound you raise, helps turn cold nights into safe, warm homes.

Walking on World Hijab Day: Honouring Resilient Muslim Women

This year, our Winter Walk takes place on World Hijab Day – a day that celebrates the strength, dignity, and resilience of Muslim women around the world.

Many of Embrace’s beneficiaries are women – single mothers, widows, survivors of abuse, refugees, and reverts – who have endured trauma and hardship, yet are empowered through safety, support, and solidarity.

As we walk, we honour:

  • Resilient Muslim women from history, whose faith and courage shaped Britain’s past
  • Resilient women today, who continue to struggle, sacrifice, and rebuild their lives in the face of poverty, isolation, and trauma

By learning their stories, we empower the women walking beside us – and those we walk for.

🌨 Join Us on 1st February…

Bring your friends, family, and children for a meaningful day out. Learn hidden history, walk with purpose, and become a Snowflake of Mercy for families who need warmth, dignity, and hope this winter.

Step back in time – so Embrace families can step forward.

🧠 FAQs: Your Questions Answered
What is the Walking Through History Winter Walk?
Walking Through History is Embrace’s first Winter Walk, taking place on World Hijab Day, in solidarity with vulnerable Muslim families facing poverty, isolation, and trauma.

This guided walk through central London explores Britain’s rich and often hidden Muslim heritage. Led by AbdulMaalik Tailor, founder of Halal Tourism Britain, participants will retrace the footsteps of resilient Muslims from the past – while fundraising to empower resilient women and families today. You will discover untold stories of Britain’s rich Muslim heritage, hidden in the heart of London.

How can I take part?

Simply sign up on this page, online. Once registered, your fundraising page will be automatically created and added to our event leaderboard. Set your target, share your page far and wide, and let people know you’re walking 5 miles this winter to support marginalised Muslim families living in poverty, trauma and isolation across the UK.

Every step you take and every pound you raise helps bring warmth, dignity, and relief to those facing the harshest conditions this winter.

Where is it taking place? The walk will take place in Central London. The starting point will be at SW1P 3BD, the Supreme Court in Parliament Square. Full meeting point details will be shared with registered participants closer to the event.

Who can take part?

Anyone who is fit and able to walk 5 miles is welcome. The tour is open to people of both genders and childre are welcome. Please note that infants and babies in pushchairs and prams will be able to attend for free.  Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The walk is suitable for:

  • Individuals and families
  • Friendship groups
  • Community groups, schools, youth groups, and workplaces

Places are extremely limited, so early registration is advised.

How much does it cost to sign up?

It costs a small registration fee of £10 for any walking participant over 3 years. Given the limited number of participants and that Embrace is a new charitable organisation with extremely limited funding, it is necessary for us to charge a registration fee to cover the essential event costs of professional guides.  This experience is being offered at cost price and is led by award winning tour guides. It normally costs at least £35 per adult, and £16 per child for a similar walking route. Any infants (0-2 years) who are not in a pushchair or pram can attend for free. Their parents are required to book a free ticket for them, for health and safety purposes, so that we have the details of all attendees.

Is the walk suitable for children?

Yes, the walk is family-friendly and educational for all, including children and young adults. Children must be supervised at all times as we will be walking along main roads. Parents must take full responsibility for their children.

If your child has any health concerns, please consult a medical professional before registering.

How much do I need to fundraise?

We ask all participants to aim for a minimum fundraising target of £150.

This amount can provide:

  • £100 Winter clothing for one vulnerable adult or child.
  • Warm bedding and duvets for 2 people.

If you choose a higher fundraising target you can provide Winter relief for more children and adults. You can also provide:

  • Energy support for families struggling to heat their homes

This will be as simple as getting 10 friends to give £15 or 15 friends to give £10 over the course of the next 6 weeks. Many participants exceed the minimum target with ease through sincere intention, du’a, and community support.

What can I expect to see on the tour?
You’ll discover:
  • Hidden Muslim landmarks across London
  • Stories of resilient Muslim women and men from Britain’s past
  • Historical sites connected to faith, migration, and resistance

The walk connects history, identity, and compassion, linking the past to the struggles faced by families today.

How fit do I need to be?

The walk is approximately 5 miles and will take 2 to 3.5 hours at a gentle pace. People of all fitness levels are welcome.

If you have any medical conditions, please consult your GP before registering.

Will food be provided? In order to keep costs to a minimum for participants and logistical factors, we will not be providing additional refreshments for attendees. There will be a break in the itinerary for lunch but this is a bring-your-own picnic event. Please bring any food, snacks, and drinks you’ll need for the walk. We may also pass by coffee shops and eateries potentially as part of the route where you can purchase refreshments. We advise you to bring any refreshments in advance to avoid slowing down the group on the day.

What should I wear?
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trainers
  • Warm, waterproof clothing
  • Layers suitable for winter weather

How can I get there? We strongly recommend travelling by public transport.

By train
Westminster station is the closest and served by the Circle, District, and Jubilee lines.

There are two mainline railway stations located close to the Supreme Court and JCPC.

London Victoria (just over 1km)
London Charing Cross (just over 1km)

By bus
The closest bus stop is Stop P, which is located on Parliament Square outside of Westminster and served by the 11, 148 and the 211 bus routes. There other nearby bus stops which are served by the 12, 24, 26, 88, 159 and 452 routes.

By car
Parking is very limited and we will be walking across central London so the end point of the walk will be some distance from the starting point.

For parking near SW1P 3BD on a Sunday, your best bets are booking underground spaces at National Theatre Car Park, Q-Park Pimlico/Victoria, or checking apps like JustPark, Parkopedia, or YourParkingSpace, as street parking in Westminster is often restricted/metered, but some residential bays might be free on Sundays (always check signs!).

Pre-Booked Car Parks (Recommended for Sunday Convenience):
Street Parking Considerations:
  • Westminster Zones: While some central London residential bays are free on Sundays, you must check the parking signs carefully for specific zone rules and times.

Is the route difficult?  No. The route is generally flat and suitable for a steady walk. Risk assessments have been conducted, and stewards will be present throughout the event.

How will I know where to go?

The walk will be professionally guided by AbdulMaalik Tailor, Founder of Halal Tourism Britain.
Participants will walk together as a group on the day, and the Embrace team, who have undertaken the route beforehand, will be available to support throughout.

What should I bring on the day?

  • A water bottle
  • Fully charged mobile phone
  • Any personal medication (e.g. asthma pump).
  • Picnic and prayer mat (if you wish to pray during the break)
  • Picnic and lunch for yourself and family.
Are there toilets on site? Yes, there will be toilets en route but they may require you to pay.

Will there be a place to pray? Yes. We will pause for prayer during the walk at our lunch stop for dhuhr. Asr will either be prayed towards the end or at the end of the walk. There will be a mosque nearby to our final destination. Please arrive in a state of wudhu and bring your own prayer mat.

What’s in it for me?

Apart from the immense reward, barakah, and chance to support a beautiful cause during the best season for the believer.

  • You get reward every time someone donates through your link
  • You patch up your shortcomings through the act of giving
  • You provide immediate relief to real families in our communities suffering in silence this Winter.
You will have the opportunity to learn about our untold history in London through an award-winning tour guide.

Aside from changing the lives of families in need this Winter, there are many benefits to walking:

It can help your blood pressure, help you to sleep better and keep your heart healthy. Walking can help you to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. By getting into regular walking habit, you will feel more energetic and awake over time.

Mental health – Walking can reduce anxiety, improve self-esteem, reduce stress and build a greater sense of calm. Look after your mind as well as your body.

Pushing out of your comfort zone and achieving – Whether you walk along the coast, trek a mountain or take multiple flights of stairs, feel the rush as you tick off the miles towards completing your Walking Through History challenge.

Build Connections & Enjoy the Day: The walk is fantastic way to spend quality time with friends, family, and loved ones. It’s also the perfect opportunity to make new friends, gather and enjoy a fun day in central London together,  learning our history, and all while supporting an incredible cause.

Support Families in Need: Above all, your participation in this challenge will directly support families in need – those too often overlooked in our community. The funds raised will provide essential help for those right here in the UK, offering hope and support where it’s needed most.

Giving Back & Gratitude: Charity is not a burden, but a privilege and responsibility. When we are blessed by Allah, the best way to show gratitude is by using those blessings to serve others. Every act of charity, big or small, brings countless blessings into your life and can protect you from unseen hardships.

Make a Difference, No Matter Your Budget: Even if you don’t have large sums of money to donate, this fundraising challenge gives you a meaningful opportunity to make a difference. Whether you have disposable income or not, every contribution counts.

And here’s a beautiful bonus: you’ll be rewarded for the donations your friends make through your participation, without their reward diminishing at all.

“Whoever guides someone to virtue will be rewarded equivalent to him who practices that good action.” [Bukhari]

Can Zakah be donated to my challenge? Yes, absolutely. You can revive the sunnah of giving your zakah to those nearest in need. Embrace has a 100% Zakah policy, ensuring your zakah will reach those in desperate need, right on our doorstep in the UK. You can read more about how we use zakah here (www.weembrace.org.uk/zakah)

Can I fundraise offline? Of course, you can. If people have given you sponsor money in cash, or made a bank transfer to you, and you want us to add this to your page, simply edit your page and “add an offline donation.” If you need any help doing this just reach out to us.

What if I don’t reach my target?

We’ve witnessed many challengers, supporters, and volunteers achieve remarkable things, even when they initially doubted themselves. With a little effort, trust in Allah (swt), and our support, we are confident that you can exceed your own expectations! However, if you do find yourself falling short of your target (though we’re certain you’ll give it your all!), don’t worry — it’s not the end. You’ll still earn the reward for your intentions, your hard work, and whatever amount you manage to raise.

As the Prophet (saw) said, “Whoever intends to perform a good deed but does not do it, Allah will record it as a complete good deed.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

So, aim high with pure intentions, say “Bismillah,” and give it your best effort. Trust that Allah (swt) will take care of the rest. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain, in sha’ Allah!

What is Gift Aid and does it really matter? Make every £1 worth 25p more at no extra cost to you. It’s just a little box to tick but Gift Aid makes a huge difference when it comes to how much money we can raise to support families in crisis right here in the UK.To be eligible to add Gift Aid to your donation, you must be a UK taxpayer and understand that if you pay less income tax and/or capital gains tax then the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all donations made in that tax year it’s your responsibility to pay any difference. The government will give a further 25% of your donation to the charity, and it doesn’t cost you or your sponsors a thing.

What if I no longer want to take part? Get in touch by emailing [email protected] or reaching out to our team admin if you can no longer take part. We regret that we will not be able to refund registration fees or anyone who has already donated to support you.
